If you are a US tech startups, you probably have never heard about GDPR. However, if you do business in Europe, or with European consumers, you will hear about it soon and should get on top of it.

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and is the new EU wide regulatory framework to manage data privacy. Any company doing business in Europe or with European consumers, even without a presence in Europe, must comply by May 25th, 2018. Whereas the US is moving to a laxer regime on data privacy, the EU is tightening its regulatory regime and giving more power to consumers. As regulation are diverging, it is all the more important for US companies doing business in Europe to be on top of GDPR.

As with many regulatory issues, it is not the most exciting thing in the world but ends up being very important for your business. If you targeting EU consumers or running a B2B2C business with customers in Europe, this does concern you. GDPR gives clear rules on topic such a data breach notifications and “right to be forgotten”.
